We assisted our client during their role in BESIX’s Brussels Metro extension project. This complex infrastructure development focused on integrating advanced mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems within the underground transport network, significantly advancing Brussels’ public transportation infrastructure.
As a subcontractor on the project, our client faced the intricate task of coordinating MEP systems integration within existing underground infrastructure while maintaining regular metro operations. The project demanded precise coordination between civil works and MEP systems, requiring innovative solutions to minimise disruption and maintain safety standards. The complexity was heightened by the need to work within strict municipal regulations and tight urban space constraints.
Our strategy centred on developing a comprehensive digital coordination system. We initiated the implementation of building information modelling (BIM) to enhance spatial coordination and clash detection. The project execution included streamlined communication protocols between our client and BESIX teams, digital documentation systems for real-time progress tracking and sophisticated risk management protocols specifically designed for underground works. Our approach emphasised maintaining safety standards while optimising installation efficiency.
The project achieved significant milestones in efficiency and cost management. MEP installation time was reduced by 14% through optimised coordination and innovative installation sequences. Cost savings reached €750,000 through improved resource allocation and reduced rework. Project documentation efficiency improved by 40% through digital systems implementation. Most notably, safety compliance rates reached 98%, setting new standards for underground infrastructure projects in Belgium.
